Green Seal for Emory!
Confernece Center Hotel First And Only In Georgia
The Emory Conference Center Hotel (ECCH) in Atlanta has been re-certified by Green Seal, an independent organization that identifies and promotes green products and services in a variety of industries and sectors.
The only Green Seal-certified hotel in Georgia, ECCH has implemented several new environmental initiatives in order to maintain its certification. Among other things, for instance, the hotel has begun recycling its waste cooking oil into fuel, composting food scraps with a self-contained composting unit and recycling via a single-stream system that allows employees to mix recyclable paper, plastic and glass within a single recycling bin.
Green Seal-certified companies must apply every year to have their certification renewed. ECCH has been certified since 2004 and is currently seeking LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Specifically, ECCH is seeking a LEED Silver rating for an expansion of the 198-room hotel and its 26,000-square-foot conference center, which began in March 2008 and will be completed in May 2009. Upon completion, the LEED-certified expansion will give ECCH 127 new rooms and 6,000 additional square feet of meeting space, as well as a bowling alley, a pool and health club, and a new bar and restaurant. ECCH's existing facility, meanwhile, will continue to work toward LEED certification after the expansion project is complete.
