Trick of the trade: Always carry a pen.
Favorite Quote: “Attitude is everything”
Kayla hails from Oxford, Alabama and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management from Auburn University. There she got her first taste of event life working at a local hotel. As Workflow Wizard, Kayla keeps the Destination South team organized and on their toes. She works very closely with Destination South President, Cynthia Alford, to ensure that Cynthia is able to spend her time focused on clients and employees. Kayla also works closely the rest of the Destination South to ensure that day-to-day tasks are accomplished while allowing for maximum focus on the heart of Destination South, the clients.
In her spare time, Kayla coaches CrossFit and enjoys relaxing with a glass wine after a workout. Kayla not only found her love of events at Auburn, but she also found the love of her life. Married to her college sweetheart, Kayla and her husband enjoy long walks with their baby girl, Taylor, and their three rescue pups: Turner, Wrigley, and Gibson.

Trick of the trade: Leave room for the unexpected in your timeline.
Favorite Quote: "There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure." -Colin Powell
Erika was made for the coastal life. A college internship took her down her first event planning path via Key Largo where she worked private corporate events and managed resort recreation. She then broadened her skill set through venue coordination and meeting planning with the Air Line Pilots Association, leading her to the coast. As soon as Erika’s feet hit the Low country sands, she knew she’d found her home at the beach and with Destination South Meetings + Events.
In her natural niche as Operations Manager, Erika puts clients at ease with her adaptability, flexibility, and supreme organizational skills. Solving problems creatively, having a rain plan plus a solid plan B and staying on top of communication gives both clients and her vendor partners confidence and a sense of calm during pre-planning as well as on-site.
Erika loves discovering the latest and greatest in the Charleston area for the benefit of DSME clients in addition to representing DSME at local networking events. Erika’s favorite downtime activity is to grab a good book, her husband, and her pup and head to the beach. She loves living close to the ocean and takes advantage of it any chance she gets. If she’s not on the sandy beaches of Charleston, she’s dreaming of the white sands of Santorini, her dream vacation spot!

Trick of the trade: Pack your patience
Favorite Quote: “Life starts just outside your comfort zone”
Shannon knew she wanted to work in events earlier than most. She served as Chair of Prom Committee in high school and realized planning was her destiny. After graduating from Marist College with a degree in communications, Shannon entered the world of venue and events sales before making the leap to corporate event planning. She spent several years as a corporate planner with a global law firm before her industry connections led her to Destination South. The strategic thinking and creative problem solving often required of events keep Shannon motivated and moving each day at Destination South. As part of the Meetings Management team for Destination South, Shannon works with clients to plan and execute meetings, conferences, conventions, expos, and more. She enjoys working with clients on key event messaging, logistics, and especially workshopping solutions to help clients achieve their goals. Passionate about networking and relationship building, Shannon is a Meeting Professionals International (MPI) member and has held several leadership roles within the organization including MPI Tennessee Past President 2019-2020, MPI Tennessee Board of Directors Member 2012-2021, MPI Global Chair of Chapter Member Advisory Council 2021&2022, and MPI Global Chair of RISE Awards Committee 2023. It’s no shock that with all the handwork she puts in at Destination South and with MPI, that she was MPI Member of the Year in 2022.
Shannon’s work and industry commitments keep her on her feet a lot, but she doesn’t mind. Her favorite hobbies include trying new restaurants, live music, and dancing. Her favorite concert venue is the Ryman Auditorium, but she’ll cut a rug anywhere there’s a good live band and a solid beat. When she’s not dancing the night away, she’s hanging with husband, Travis, three children, and their dog, Luna. She and Travis spend a lot of their time on the soccer field cheering on the kids, but love traveling and hope to explore New Zealand one day soon.
